As of January 1st, 2024, these are the new requirements for purchase of firearms in Hawaii.
Having any of the following will disqualify you from owning a firearm:
Medical marijuana card, DUI, TRO, misdemeanors involving domestic violence, any felonies.
Procedure for purchase of handgun:
- Take the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting class from an authorized NRA firearms instructor. As of Jan. 1 2024, all previous classes are invalid and you will need to re-take the class. Contact information for NRA instructors can be found in the menu under “Contact an Instructor”
- Select and pay for a handgun. We will give you a worksheet with make, model, serial number, etc. and keep the gun stored in our safe until you get your permit.
- Call the County of Hawaii firearms office at 8089612239 and ask for an appointment to apply for a handgun Permit. They will tell you what to bring to your appointment.
- Wait until your permit is issued and pick up your handgun permit. Your permit is valid for a period of 30 days for you to pick up your gun.
- Call the firearms office to register your firearm within five days after pickup.
Procedure for purchase of rifle or shotgun:
- You must have taken a HAWAII hunter's safety class. The class is available online at www.hunter-ed.com/hawaii
- Call any firearms office in the County of Hawaii and ask for an appointment to apply for a Long Gun Permit, They will tell you what to bring to your appointment.
- Wait until your permit is issued and pick up your long gun permit. With this permit, you will be able to buy as many long guns as you'd like for one year.
- Call firearms office to register your firearm within five days after pickup.
